A Pinch of Salt

Royal Concert Hall Nottingham

Sunday April 18th 2010

The programme for 'A Pinch of Salt' explored the problems the world faces with regard to food production and waste.

The 2010 Science on Stage show is built around the theme of food and uses dance and music to approach the subject along two different routes:

There are science ‘pegs’ on which the wider issues are hung. There are a number of these in the first half of the show where we use items from previous productions to give a flavour of major science concepts like predation, photosynthesis and electrolysis. In the second half we will première a new half hour dance musical entitled ‘A Pinch of Salt’ which deals with the creation of atoms and their murderously reactive nature before transformation into peaceful and loving ions. It then explores some applications of salt before expanding into broader food issues.

The second perspective concerns the wider and more engaging ethical issues Here we are developing an approach we initiated last year of using the spaces in the audience areas of the Royal Concert Hall to provide a kind of ’Science Fair ‘during an extended interval so that the audience (approximately 1,000) can be intrigued by demonstrations, have their questions answered, their challenges met and their need for further information satisfied. As well as science demonstrations there will be artistic and literary display material.

Over three hundred young people and around a hundred adults gathered at the Royal Concert Hall to treat an audience of almost a thusand to a different kind of night out. Our professional guests were African drummers 'Bass Tone Slap' and 'New ENglish CContempoorary Ballet School'. It was great working with them and we hope to work with both again in the future.

The overall aim was food, its production and the way we waste it, a much more important issue than most of us realise. The show was packed with music, dance and light and film plus an interval offering science demonstrations, art and literature displays.

These images are taken from a large collection of photographs and record just a few of the very special moments from the evening.
