Adiemus
Our first combination evening where we had a programme which was half science based and half devoted to a performance of a standard choral work., in this case a full production of Adiemus. By doing this we were able to attract a wider range and higher standard of singers and musicians, who, it turned out, enjoyed the science as much as the Jenkins.
The science performance pieces were all from Little Blue, we chose pieces that dealt with:
- The asteroid impact of 65 million years ago that hit the sea just off Mexico and exploded with the force of a major nuclear war with about the same results. Its an ill wind though... it left the seas and the land empty and so gave the mammals their chance. As the earth recovered they took charge and, in the fullness of time, gave rise to: Us.
A haunting gaelic piece portrayed of these events
- We then moved on to the story of the first city..Jericho.. It was a great success, it was the place to be seen, it was the dawn of urban chic. and a rolicking good song which everyone loves singing.
- Next stop was an easy to sing but complex sounding round on the subject of humankinds’ evolving tendency to ask questions; called ‘why?’
- A much more sophisticated piece based on the rise of religion using first the Greek and then the Latin pleas for mercy from the Almighty.
- Misuse of religion is approached through two questioning pieces which embrace the Irish Question. Entitled ‘The Volunteer’ and ‘No Surrender’ it
isn’t too hard to assign sides to the titles.
- The first half ended with a drum dance that celebrates the three billion years remaining without making too many suggestions as to where they might lead.
